The news about the invasion hit hard. A week later, the world is still processing the full consequences of this aggression, but one thing is clear:
This is not just about Ukraine.

Putin’s international-law-breaking geopolitical move shows that imperialism is not dead and the fragile peace among nations is all too easily broken. It is up to us as global citizens to use information technologies as weapons against this aggression and disregard for human life and human rights.

But “what can I, a mere citizen, do about this?”. What do you do when you feel you have to do something but you feel impotent in front of the immense power that world leaders have? It seems like the game is rigged and the players are too powerful.
Yet, there is hope!

The potential of web3 technologies to empower people has been overshadowed by money-grabbing schemes and media hype. Behind the veil, powerful tools have been maturing to offer new ways for everyday citizens to have impact on the world at large.

Immediately after the news of Russia’s invasion, people of web3 mobilized with the creation of DAOs to support Ukraine. The response fast, with DAOs such as Unchain raising close to $1,3 million in the first day! While spread of the word was facilitated by skillful use of web2 platforms - crowdfunding as well as coordination, transparency & trust in desired spending of the funds is enabled by web3.

Seeing the response begs the question; what else could web3 communities do?

• If DAOs had the tools and momentum they have today, could they have also provided support to the millions of displaced Syrians?

• Could Syrians themselves have used them to fund & build new settlements?

• Could DAOs organize diplomats?

• Would approaches such as Token Engineering which design token economies to align incentives & support public goods, also help in de-escalating conflict?

• Could the use of decentralized infrastructure help disempowered citizens to communicate & coordinate under censorship & bans?

It’s this kind of worry and curiosity that each of us engaged in web3 will have to entertain in this historical moment of crisis. We should act with urgency for the present & aim at creating more anti-fragile social conditions & coordination mechanisms for everyday citizens in the future to take action & change the course of history.

Organizations providing aid right now

The attempts started with just a handful of members in Telegram chats and “word-of-mouth” through Twitter with a slew of attempts forming. These soon coalesced into bigger and more focused organizations with thousands of members and volunteers. At the moment the biggest attempts are Unchained DAO and Ukraine DAO.

Unchain DAO

A DAO organized by our friends from Atlantis World among other prominent web3 people to provide non-lethal humanitarian aid for Ukrainian civilians. It accepts payment in a number of cryptocurrecnies beyond Ethereum and Bitcoin including Polygon, NEAR and Avalanche.

Objectives:

• Finding transport in Ukraine for refugees.

• Finding shelters in Poland.

Ukraine DAO

A new initiative by Pussy Riot, Trippy Labs and PleasrDao to raise funds using Ethereum NFTs to support Ukraine after the attack by Russia.
It accepts payment in Ether.

Goals:

• Donate funds to Ukrainian civilian organizations.

• Support the Ukrainian resistance against Russia.

Palianytsia Coordination Centre

An ongoing initiative with a supply chain, warehouses & refugee shelters already in place accepting donations in 6 crypto & 3 fiat currencies to scale their operations & help more Ukrainians.

Already doing:

• Provide shelter for all refugees + food + psychological help

• Provide humanitarian help to those in need

• Collect humanitarian aid, food, medications

• Organize and conduct civil patrolling of the streets

🃏 Season V release

An epic session on the 🏗-builders-guild keyboards has taken the MetaOS Mid-Season V release from development to production — full Ceramic integration for profiles, new landing page, new Seeds page, new guild-join page, and dynamic profile cards with custom blocks. 👀

Meanwhile, vid is making good progress on the Questing system.

Pieces are really starting to come together now, more on MyMeta in the next issue but do know that its about to get adopted & MetaOS as a whole is about to get whole loot smoother! 🙃

Minting is back OMG

• Polimyl, Alec, Michiel, and Luxumbra figured out a solution for the minting issue - and got this month’s distro out, check your wallet!

• Polimyl & Luxumbra reverted the Seed contract trasfer bug & Polimyl rented Google server space for faster SourceCred calculations.

• vid and Dave made the first version of the Seeds page 👀

• Dysbulic did several upgrades and refactoring on the Player Profiles page of MyMeta, through an all-nighter & doing pair programming with tenfinney in the builders dungeon for an ungodly amount of time

• Dan13 made the profile blocks modular & added link embed custom blocks.

• Alec made the new guilds join page & fixed the onboarding bot.

• Alec added a speed increase by optimizing caching for the DAO, Guild, and Player relationships.

• Dave designed & vid implemented v1 of the Quests Dashboard

• Luxumbra got into the Achievements code with dekanbro.

• Given the 3D bits of the new design will take a bit longer, Luxumbra went out & finished the new landing page with the placeholder images 😱
