Metagaming Crypto, Building An Onboarding Machine & Summoning The Great Flood
This post is pretty much Part 2 of the 2 Paths of Crypto post. If you haven’t read it yet, maybe go read it 🙃
So, you’ve read my last post & now you’re wondering: What’s the meta?
Building quietly with an “if you build it, they will come” mentality probably isn’t.
The two paths obviously intertwine; just because you’re here for the technology & for the long term, doesn’t mean you should abstain from making any sort of quick profit.
You know the thing about casinos though, you’re more likely to get poor quick.
There are people actively funneling newcomers into useless old coins, value extracting projects & new fork cash grabs. When bullshit raises hundreds of millions, it's our duty as legit projects to shill, grab some of that attention & put it to good use.
Well, we’ve pretty much been abstaining from shilling. I’ve been thinking “let’s just do a few more things & then I’ll go into shilling mode” - basically for the full past year. And how can we claim we’re building metagame if we, ourselves, are not playing the meta.
Meta View
There’s obviously a lot of dumb money flowing into the space, why let the loudest voices funnel it all into bullshit? The loud mouths changed the game; they made shilling a more effective strategy than shipping. Now it's on us to adapt.
If you’re building a life-changing technology & trying to raise money for it, you should be as loud as the assholes shilling bullshit or get lost in the sea of noise.
And don’t be like “I can build quietly by raising money from VCs, then progressively decentralize” - none of that bullshit please. Community-first is the name of the game.
Just make sure you explain its for the long term, what are the risks & that they won’t get rich quick. Most will pass but the ones that stop are the right ones - the ones that will stay & create value.
Well, the bull market won’t last forever & it gets insanely more difficult to raise money during the bear market, so make your moves.
The Great Flood
Summoning The Great Flood is my meme as old as Seeds, I just didn’t expect things to move this fast. Hopefully, the crypto market will chill for a bit before peaking and closing this bull season - but we don’t have a lot of time.
The Great Flood is a time of a great amount of Ether pouring down on the Seed plantation - the flood that will allow us to build MetaGame throughout the next bear winter & beyond.
Let’s get into current numbers:
Seed marketcap: $0.9m
Pool liquidity: $500k
Eth in the pool: 56 (~$150k)
Eth in the DAO: 38 (~$100k)
The total of ~$250k backing that $0.9m marketcap.
Crypto enters the bear market for another few years? Goodbye MetaGame.
To be fair, in a way, MetaGame can’t fail because it already succeeded; it already changed a bunch of lives & blazed the trail for others to follow.
Buuut… In my humble opinion, we should strive to at least 20x the pool which would hopefully let us take out something like $5m, allowing us to build peacefully over the next few years of winter.
We literally need less than 0.025% of Doge’s marketcap - an amount that would allow us to change multiples of more lives than we’ve changed so far.
I will personally be buying more Seeds to help prepare MetaGame for the next bear winter & I hope you will too 🙃
An Onboarding Machine
So, why should you buy Seeds? What are we even doing? Well, there’s a bunch of reasons you should buy Seeds which I’ve written about already; I’ve also written extensively about what we’re doing/want to do. If you still haven’t been to the wiki, you really should.
Here’s a tl;dr: our current goal is to build an onboarding machine for DAOs & the wider Ethereum ecosystem, meanwhile solidifying A Decentralized Factory & a Web of Opportunity.
Anyway, MetaGame is about onboarding people to this path of value creation. To teach them about why we’ve been here for so long, how they can create value & help us build this decentralized future we’ve been dreaming of.
We’re building an onboarding machine but its not about building an onboarding machine. It’s also not just about the future of work & organization creation; it's about building a decentralized society, an alternative socioeconomic system - one that’s about helping people level up & make a positive impact on the world.
While we’ve onboarded a lot of people to DAOs & the wider Ethereum space through our conferences, meetups & generally, our discord channels, both text & voice; we don’t really have much in terms of non-MetaGame content - it's time to change that.
If you’ve been in the space for a while & know a thing or two, join us next Thursday at 5pm UTC & help by writing more guides for newcomers to follow.
Else, join MetaGame & learn more about the space or contribute in other ways.
MetaGame Meta 👀
Slow week this one, the consequences of a market downturn are obvious.
The next MetaRadio episode with Santi Siri has been recorded during the past week. Waiting on the post to be written this weekend & out for release it goes!
Within the Designers Guild, Dave continues working on the MetaOS & pushes out the first version of a high definition mockup of the homepage. Also updates the role description & guild page to make it easier for newcomers. Looks like Blake will be playing with implementing the first version of the mega drawer.
Within the Builders Guild, dan13 starts building the design system & makes a good progress. Saimano returns after a long time & submits a PR for adding analytics to MyMeta & the rest of the platform. Dysbulic reports Ceramic finally being ready for launch on mainner, hopefully soon allowing us to wean off 3box. MetaDreamer wrote/fixed a script for updating player XP table on MyMeta automatically every night. Our newest builder, sackofojoy, submitted his first PR!
Penguin organizes the first Bot Army meetup to talk about the roadmap for bots & start hacking away at the next features. The new release called Chocolate Starfish will add features like anonymous reporting of problems or feedback by whispering to a bot or reacting to a message with a starfish emoji to have it reported to the moderators.
Writers Guild (gnomeski) makes good progress on writing about the Social Pact, Naughty Step & Moderation Guidelines to help newcomers as well as moderators prevent & deal with the drama that inevitably ensues when the cultures clash.
With the closing of most of the issues pertaining to the Better Onboarding raid - looks like its about to phase-shift into Innkeepers Align. Great progress was made on the Metarrhizal Network (discord cleanup/reorganization/explanation) with a bunch of people coworking on it in chunks of 6+ hours at a time & the implementation well underway.
Headhunters Align decides to inflitrate ETHGlobal. Interested in joining? Register through here. Else, moar soon!
There was also a Skill Forest v2 meetup happening on the outskirts of MetaGame with the Deep Work team presenting us with their version of Skill Trees. Interested in learning more? Jump in here or watch this.
Open Roles
The most sought-after roles remain:
🛠️ Builder
We got a bunch of new builders but the list of issues is long 🙃
Good thing is that we don’t need Solidity developers, we need good old web2 developers. Those of ReactJS, TypeScript kind & those familiar with Hasura & Graph.
Check the role description here, get going on the builders path here or ask about it in the #builders-guild.
🤑 Patron
Patrons are the players that are contributing to MetaGame by buying & planting Seeds. You can read more about how it works here. We won’t be making a big push for patrons for at least another week, but do know that the planting season is soon & it might be worth it being among the earliest 🙃
🕵️♂️ Headhunter
Headhunter is a player who knows a lot of people or where to find them. His role is to get the other roles filled. Currently, the highest priority for headhunters are the builders, though finding more innkeepers & patrons definitely won’t hurt 😇
Onwards! 🐙
Last week’s Community Gathering about Security Tips & Tricks was least attended in a long while. First I thought it might have been because people are not interested in it, but then I noticed its because 10+ people were raiding on the Metarrhizal Network overtime in the ops-dungeon while another 10 were raiding overtime the Cohort Onboarding session. ☺️
These days its not uncommon to come back to discord 6+ hours after a call & see people still working or shooting crap inside the voice channel 😱
