If you have a habit of looking at numbers on a screen for way too many hours a day, it’s time to realize one thing… that 🙏 shit 🙏 AIN’T 🙏 REAL🙏! Yes, these numbers do have material consequences and they correspond to things that have some kind of value, but in the end, they are a virtual game, a simulation if you please.
Accept that you are playing a game and realize that games can always be exited. You may choose to try to win it, or you may choose to quit it but to keep on playing is optional.
The only valuable asset
These challenging times are a good opportunity for us web3 folks to finally practice wisdom and get down to doing some no BS serious introspection.
The breakneck speed of constant innovation and novelty are definitely impressive but going too fast is how you guarantee you are going to crash. We need time off, time away and generally just…TIME! Because time is what is truly scarce and with time, time itself becomes more and more valuable. What if you started counting your losses, not in fiat or any random token…but in seconds?
It is now quite clear, that we cannot keep on fetishizing overworking and a gig-work mentality. These are artifacts of a bygone mental model that the web3 ethos is supposed to leave behind.
Time off is important to ground yourself and restructure your value landscape. It is the only context in which you can confront yourself and play Tekken with your demons. Are you leaving something important behind by focusing too much on web3? Are you taking care of your health and body? Do you use work as a means of escape? Are you developing ethically, physically and spiritually? The demons will keep on taunting you in the background if you don’t banish em’ off to tartarus!
Revaluation 3.0
If DAO work makes you feel like you want to sell all your possessions and live an ascetic life in a cabin off the grid, plotting revenge against industrial society, then you must rethink the conditions of your work and why you are here in the first place.
Everybody’s values are different but if I may speak at least for myself then I would answer this question in this way:
I am here because this is the only place where optimism is still alive.
I am here because the people here are some of the most interesting, kind and mutli-faceted currently on Earth’s crust.
I am here because I love geeking over emerging technologies and novel cultural movements.
I am here because my uniqueness and creativity is actually being valued.
I am here because I was provided with opportunities that no other place ever offered.
And honestly, that’s what’s ACTUALLY great about web3. DeFi is great but it is very fragile. Crypto is great but it is most often manipulated. Both are prone to capture by the powers that be. Both are castles built on powder-thin sand.
Instead of maximizing profit, utility or even abstract and naive notions of social impact, why not aim at maximizing free time for a change. But not free time as in mindless media consumption, but more like what Ancient Roman folks called otium, a sort of laid-back but meaningful form of leisure that relaxes and reorients the mind as opposed to negotium which is the constant struggle to make ends meet. It seems like our modern way of life in a neoliberal capitalist logic is very effective at turning every tiny bit of otium into negotium by means of us participating as consumers in the production (or information) machine.
Web3 seems to not only have not escaped this but thrown us even deeper into negotium through the constant struggle to tokenize and financialize more and more aspects of our digital life. Always on the grind.
Borrowing from Jim Rutt’s words of wisdom, we should aim at reclaiming our “cognitive sovereignty” (as Jim Rutt has very succinctly put it). It is all about taking back our dissipated attention and focus, by limiting our exposure to the grasp of the attention economy. Because all of us web3 workers of the world must finally acknowledge that (at least) the conditions of web3 work are not as humane or dignified as we often claim. Being 15 hrs/day in front of screens being bombarded by Tweets, Discord notifications and constant calls take a toll on more than just your body. It is not a coincidence that web3 has a fascination with “souls” all of a sudden. The Zeitgeist is screaming its lungs out. Let’s listen.
What do? Well, the solution couldn’t be simpler. Take a break, go talk to some friends and go be around nature. Because it’s hard to do a rug pull on fresh air and friendship.
